Abstract

Morbidly obese patients suffer from psychological distresses. Psychosocial factors and the psychological and emotional functional ability of them also contribute to obesity. Therefore we assume that morbid obesity and psychological distresses are interrelated. This article summarizes common psychiatric problems in morbidly obese patients and the relationship with psychiatric problems and bariatric surgery. Morbid obesity is related with binge eating disorder, depression, panic disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, eccentric and anxious cluster personality, low self esteem and so on. In post-surgery patients, pre-existing binge eating disorder is related to weight gain and worse mental health. Morbidly obese patients who successfully lose weight report a significant improvement in depressive symptoms and psychosocial functioning. And patients may be at increased risk for substance use following bariatric surgery. Psychological distresses affect the results of bariatric surgery and bariatric surgery also affects the psychological area. For postsurgical success, morbidly obese patients should complete a psychological evaluation.
